Our Children’s choir will sing the Ordinary and the Psalm verse for the Introit today. They also sang the Ave Maria at Communion and Salve Regina at the end of Mass.

Dedication of Southwark Cathedral

HISTORY

The History of the Feast of the Dedication of a church can be found in the excellent Liturgical Year, by Dom Prosper Guéranger. Southwark Cathedral was originally consecrated by Bishop John Butt (20 April 1826 – 1 November 1899) in 1894. The Feast of the Dedication was appointed to be celebrated on the Third Sunday of October, rather than the day of the actual dedication. We will be singing the Heinrich Isaac settings from the Choralis Constantinus of the Introit: Terribilis est locus iste and the Communion: Domus mea, we would like to thank C. Cooze for producing these modern settings for us from the 500 year old original part books. We also sang Anton Bruckner‘s setting of the Gradual: Locus iste with the verse sung to chant, we will also sing the Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina setting of the Offertory: Domine Deus in simplicitate.
