Feast of the Blessed English Martyrs

Commemoration of St Monica.

HISTORY

A commentary on the History of the Sunday and the Season in general can be found in the excellent Liturgical Year, by Dom Prosper Guéranger. Commentary on the English and Welsh Martyrs can be found in the St Andrew daily Missal,

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries innumerable Englishmen suffered persecution and
gave their lives for the ancient faith of their country, for the supremacy of the Pope, the unity of the
Church and the holy sacrifice of the Mass, nearly four hundred of them in conditions which have
allowed their cause to be introduced at Rome as martyrs. Of these, two have now been canonized, and
two hundred declared Blessed; some of them have been granted a personal feast, but their common
celebration is kept on this day.

More on this feast can be found on the Society of St. Bede blog including an English Latin Proper sheet.
